which may or may not substantially impair ... Disability Defined in the Americans With Disabilities Act. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a federal law that protects the civil rights of people with disabilities. To be protected under the ADA, a person (including children) must meet its legal definition of disability and be “qualified”. Many state laws provide additional rights beyond the ADA. The ADA has a specific definition of the term "disability" that establishes the requirements a person must meet to be considered "an individual with a disability under the ADA." Determining whether you are a person with a disability under the ADA is not always simple. The ADA defines a person with a disability as someone who: Has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities, or Has a history or record of an impairment (such as cancer that is in remission), or Is regarded as having such an impairment by others even if the individual does not actually have a disability (such as a person who has scars from a severe burn that does not limit any major life activity). This is a legal definition—not a medical or social justice-related definition. In addition, there is not a registry or a list of medical conditions or disabilities that are protected by the ADA. Any medical condition or disability that substantially limits one or more major life activities.
